@Fatima
Happy new year, Fatima! Hope you had a great Xmas with the family. I totally agree with you that being yourself should empower you and makes you feel more relaxed. I think it makes your life more difficult when you have to maintain an act just to please people or for conformity - you also need to remember the lines you have rehearsed beforehand, otherwise your superficiality will shine through.

Just let go and stop the acting - so much easier and better in the long run to be just yourself.

Thank you, my friend.

@Hulbert
As Bruce said, it is very difficult in life to be yourself, as we are already divided psychologically by the time we reach adulthood. We also become actors in life to conform and fit into whatever social circle we find ourselves.

Obviously, the best way forward in life is to be honest with ourselves and to others from the start. Self-knowledge is an important lesson that teaches us who we actually are and how we should live rightly no matter our surroundings and what other people think.

Never let anyone else dictate on who you should be and how you should live your life - be true to yourself always.

Thank you for your wise comment, Mr Lee.

I like this concept of being yourself. It takes a high degree of courage in order to do so. Being authentic is helpful to building relationships and also improving one's self on a daily basis. Thanks for sharing this article excerpt.

Happy new year, NP! Nice to see you again, my friend and great to be back after a fantastic Xmas with the Family.

You are quite right in your comment regarding Eastern Philosophy - Self- knowledge is the most important goal in regards daily living.

I will leave you with a relevant quote from none other than the man himself,

"I have not invented a "new style," composite, modified or otherwise that is set within distinct form as apart from "this" method or "that" method. On the contrary, I hope to free my followers from clinging to styles, patterns, or molds. Remember that Jeet Kune Do is merely a name used, a mirror in which to see "ourselves". . . Jeet Kune Do is not an organized institution that one can be a member of. Either you understand or you don't, and that is that."

Jason-happy new year! Good to see you posting again. What I like so much about Eastern philosophy is the emphasis on body work. One studies oneself not through ideas or reading books, but by observing one's responses to things. How one's own behavior determines what one thinks and feels. If one can do this in a nonchalant way and not be self-conscious, one can save oneself a lot of grief.
