The Truth About News: Noam Chomsky’s Manufacturing Consent

Carrying on from yesterday’s post ‘The Truth About News: 2 Fair and Balanced News Programs To Watch’ detailing the mainstream media’s aims to manipulate and deceive the masses through propaganda, I now recommend you watch the classic Canadian documentary Manufacturing Consent based on the Noam Chomsky/Edward Herman book
by the same name. Explores the propaganda model of the media.

If you have no idea who Noam Chomsky is the following excerpt was written about him by the New York Times:

“Judged in terms of the power, range, novelty and influence of his thought, Noam Chomsky is arguably the most important intellectual alive today.”

“This film showcases Noam Chomsky, one of America’s leading linguists and political dissidents. It also illustrates his message of how government and big media businesses cooperate to produce an effective propaganda machine in order to manipulate the opinions of the United States populous. The key example for this analysis is the simultaneous events of the massive coverage of the communist atrocities of Khmer Rouge regime of Cambodia and the suppression of news of the US supported Indonesian invasion and subjugation of East Timor. Written by Kenneth Chisholm”

  1. A great video. I saw it several years ago. Chomsky began as a linguist, so his ideas are always expressed with such force and clarity.

  2. Jason Cooper says:

Yes NP, the courageous Chomsky is a great purveyor of truth, knowledge and justice. I have been watching and reading him for years – he’s literally a walking encyclopedia who more than disturbs the hypocritical governments in the West (especially those who hold power in America) and their sinister foreign policy.

The following question by Charlie Rose, which was mostly asked in jest, whilst interviewing Chomsky says it all really…”…How come you know so much about everything?”
