The following metaphorical experiment involving monkeys reminds me much of a quote on Truth by Arthur Schopenhauer, especially the “violently opposed” part. The quote is:
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.
As for the experiment (true or not), it seems that the majority of the human race have replaced the monkeys in terms of our minds being imprisoned by those in, so-called, authority as well as the societal pressures to conform.
There is no doubt that we have all but become easily frightened and obedient monkeys, through the apparent use of the “carrot and stick” policy instigated by those who wish to coerce us into doing their bidding, whilst we violently turn on those who dare to step out the status quo. Read more…

Are we nothing but modern-day slaves to the system?
The following short thought-provoking video from Stefan Molyneux of Freedomain Radio website, should wake you up out of your ignorantly blissful life of deception…well, that’s what Molyneux wishes to achieve with this nihilistic feast for the senses.
Molyneux offers us up a metaphor of society as being a huge farm with us being the frightened cattle for those in power (the Farmers) to control and manipulate with the use of fear – which only serves to imprison our minds and direct our motives.
According to Molyneux, we are nothing but livestock who are all too willing to work for our hidden masters who make huge profits off our labour. Read more…

This terrifying day comes but once a year, but some of us wish it wasn’t so
Because those us with a nervous disposition, face the day with a frown and fro
This day is maybe one, but there are those who relive this dreadful fright
Which haunts their minds and their sight, of every day and every night
How does one remove this persistent malady, which affects their mood and their very life
Does one shout “begone my fear!” then hide under the covers
Or does one look for comfort by telling others
“No!” I say, look deep into yourselves, and you will dare to find
A joyful child blooms inside, who likes to dance and sing a rhyme
Become a child like the generation today, who face the 31st with excited haste
So why not dress up like a monster, and make-up an ugly face
Ready to go out into the dark, because tonight is Halloween
Without any fear or any worry, it’s a tremendous joy to be seen

Some Homework to do for the rest of your life:

How do I apply what I have learned about myself towards dealing with certain fears or impediments of the mind?
The best way to go about dealing with inner issues is to deal with them one at a time with a clear mind. Once you get into the habit of self-observation as I advised you to do during the routine of attaining self-knowledge, you should learn to question every thought and emotion that affects your mind, so to determine if it is contradictory to your personal development in life.
This self-interrogation is similar to the method employed by Socrates to question people about their own opinions and beliefs.
Once false opinions or beliefs are determined they should be discarded immediately if you want to make progress towards “Truth”. The same philosophy can be used when dealing with negative feelings (false emotions such as fear) that can impinge on your state of mind.

So what happens after one has struck up the courage to face their fears?
Having the courage to live is one thing, but having the self-knowledge to become aware and deal with any negative emotions before they take root is another matter altogether. Believe me, it will take great strength of mind and spirit to enter into this war, and there can be no overnight success.
However, you can take great confidence in knowing that it isn’t impossible to develop the self-knowledge and power within yourself to break down the psychological barriers in time (we don’t have that much time to be honest). After all, you must begin the campaign by empowering yourself psychologically and spiritually towards becoming a god of yourself – you are both master and creator of your kingdom, in mind as well as in spirit.
“He is a man of courage who does not run away, but remains at his post and fights against the enemy.”
~ Socrates
