The Schopenhauer Philosophy: How not to be a Grumpy Old Man Whilst Avoiding Pessimism

The pessimistic Schopenhauer strikes a pose

Why am I such a Miserable Old Fart?

It’s easy being pessimistic when you are a grumpy old man like me, with nothing but endless conflict, the continuing economic crisis, and Mayan predictions of something terrible to come.

So all I can see in front of me is the impending march of doom.  For every minute the clock passes, brings me ever more closer to extinction.

This awareness of my own mortality brings with it cynicism, as I cast envious eyes over the world that I will soon no doubt leave. For vengeance I wish nothing but misery for the rest of you poor souls who will remain in this apparent  existence of suffering.

But then again, why would I want to spend anymore time here being tortured by this miserable and superficial planet anyway, with its competitively violent human beings and their ignorant ways – maybe I am the fortunate one. Read more…

As a Man Thinketh

Description

A long-standing classic in the field of self-help, this book is a must read for anyone interested in bettering themselves.

The human mind is more powerful than most people know and this book provides readers with a major key in teaching us how to use it properly.

Thoughts are what truly control your life, and this book can well be considered a kind of “owner’s manual” for the mind.

The teachings are simple but powerful. Chapters include Thought and Character, Effect of Thought on Circumstances, Effect of Thought on Health and the Body, Thought and Purpose, The Thought-Factor in Achievement, Visions and Ideals, and Serenity.

The Eye of God

The Eye of God

No, I haven’t all of a sudden become a religious fanatic overnight, and begun preaching the lord’s words to his wayward followers.  In fact, I do not belong to any organised religion or follow any particular faith at all, but I do believe one can live religiously and can empower oneself to believe that they are God themselves so to achieve things in life that they could not have done otherwise.

According to the iconoclastic German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche, “God is Dead”, which was meant to signify an end to a belief in a false god created by man himself.  Before you religious people out there start wagging the finger, I’m not here to argue the merits/demerits of your faith or to debate if a god actually exists.  I’m only here to express my opinion on what “God” psychologically can do towards motivating people to find their true purpose and to becoming autonomous productive beings.  In other words, if one can say “I am God” spiritually, something which connects all of us into one consciousness, then this can provide a positive outlook in regard having the power to create a life worth living.

So here’s where the following question comes to the fore:  What is “Truth”?  In my mind, “Truth” and “God” are synonymous with one another, and as such cannot be separated when mentioned in the same sentence.  So therefore, “I am Truth”, this omnipotent thing that rules our lives behind a veil of vagueness very much like “God”.
